Cine goers cancelling their tickets for Adipurush after the negative reviews

There was never such an unprecedented hatred against Prabhas’ movies as his latest venture — Adipurush — has been facing now!

Not even when his other big-budgeted action drama Saaho (2019) took a deep nose-dive at the box office a few years ago.

But all this is happening, after the filmmakers failed to meet the mammoth expectations that the audience had on Adipurush, especially for the way it has been packaged — the spiritual angle for the devout, retelling of the epic Ramayana that most Indians are fond of, and of course, the VFX part with which the young generation film lovers are obsessed.

Ever since the reviews kept pouring out on social media on Friday morning, 16 June, actor Prabhas along with director Om Raut have been trending on Twitter.

Public cancelling tickets

On Saturday, 17 June, the general public started posting screenshots of the cancelled tickets on their Twitter pages. Soon, the hashtag #AdipurushDisaster started trending on social media.

One of the filmgoers, Shashank Durgvanshi, who cancelled the tickets going on the reviews on Twitter, spoke to South First.

“The reasons to cancel the tickets were quite a few. Firstly, I felt something unusual when the Adipurush trailer was launched. I was sceptical because of the bizarre casting, bad visual effects, and Hanuman ji’s facial representation. I got the vibe that there won’t be any justice meted out to the epic Ramayan,” he admitted.

Shashank grew up watching Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan (1987), Mahabharat (1988), Upanishad Ganga (2012), and Jai Gange Maiya (2009) as a young boy.

“There was always Indian wisdom and grace in the making. They were raw, I’d rather put it this way. Baahubali (2015, 2017) and RRR (2022) were raw and realistic on the screen. But the Adipurush trailer gave me Hollywood vibes,” he said.

Shashank further added, “The day before, I thought of giving a shot at the movie despite my many apprehensions. But Hanuman ji’s dialogue dampened my mood to watch Adipurush — ‘Tel tere baap ka, kapda tere baap ka, jalegi bhi tere baap ki..’ It really sounded chapdi to me. There’s a certain way when characters in Ramayan express their anger. This dialogue from Hanuman ji just seemed like it was from Dharavi, Mumbai. So, I didn’t want to watch it and waste my time.”

Campaigners try to douse flames

Meanwhile, agencies associated with Adipurush’s digital campaign are trying hard to douse the flames on social media.

Twitter user Roshan Rai reported an incident when an agency requested him to remove negative tweets on the film for money.

Another social media user, Amitabh Chaudhary opined how big a disaster Adipurush is, as he kept getting messages from family and friends after cancelling the tickets.

Kartik Pujari wrote, “I’ve cancelled tickets of #Adipurush just because I don’t want to see the wrong Ramayan.”

Damage controlling by Sandeep Vanga

The Adipurush team roped in Sandeep Reddy Vanga on Saturday, 17 June, to put a positive tweet following the flak that the movie has been receiving for the last 24 hours.

However, their damage-control attempts didn’t take much time to get trolled. Sandeep is all set to work with Prabhas in his upcoming Spirit.

A Twitter user commented: “We don’t want to hear this kind of great stuff about #Spirit. We don’t deserve this DIVINE POWER. Out of all the forthcoming projects of #Prabhas, only SPIRIT has the chance to stand out. Please don’t disappoint us.”

Prabhas Raju’s handle on Twitter tweeted, “Earth-shattering openings all over the world. #Prabhas The name is enough.”

Commenting on the tweet, a user with the handle Zorba commented,” People are breaking theatres and asking for money back. which earth are you talking about?”
