10 years of Simple Agi Ondh Love Story

Exactly a decade ago, a Kannada movie trailer was released even before the film went on the floors. A rarity by all means, the trailer was a runaway hit and raised expectations about the film — Simple Agi Ondh Love Story.

The movie is celebrating its 10th anniversary today, 8 March. Simple Agi Ondh Love Story ran houseful for several weeks and gave birth to not just one or two but three stars in the Kannada film industry.

It marked the debut of director Sunil Kumar aka Simple Suni and helped its lead actors — Rakshit Shetty and Shwetha Srivatsav — rise to fame.

“It was my debut film as a director. Rakshit Shetty and Shwetha acted in a couple of movies though. They were working hard to find their feet in the industry. Simple Agi Ondh Love Story was decisive in many ways for all three of us,” Simple Suni told South First.

Rakshit Shetty acted in a couple of movies as a lead actor, including Tuglak which earned him critical appreciation. However, he was eagerly looking for commercial success.

The same was the case with Shwetha Srivatsav. She did a few projects as a supporting actor and a female lead but did not get the credit she deserved.

While celebrating the biggest success in her career, Shwetha Srivatsav told South First, in an exclusive interview, that she never expected that Simple Agi Ondh Love Story would end up being such a massive hit.

The movie not only gave a push to her career but went down in the history of Sandalwood as one of the most loved films to be made on a modest budget with newcomers.

A game changer

“I entered films after my marriage. I was honestly struggling to make a breakthrough despite being part of a few projects. When I signed up for Simple Agi Ondh Love Story, I decided to do only lead roles. I had no clue how it was shaping up. I used to do my part and go home after the day’s work,” the actor recollected.

She remembers director Simple Suni as a shy person on the sets. “He was too shy and spoke little. It was more like a boy’s gang and I would finish my shoot and not go into detail as to how the entire film was coming up.”

Shwetha Srivatsav also recalled how the innovative idea of exclusively shooting the trailer even before the film’s shooting commenced was a big game changer.

She shared that she had just 5,000 followers on Facebook which shot up to 50,000 in a single day soon after the trailer was released.

About the reception on the day of the release of Simple Agi Ondh Love Story, director Simple Suni said a newcomer’s movie usually picks up gradually at the box office due to word-of-mouth publicity.

“However, in our case, the first-day-first-show turned out to be houseful which happens rarely in any film industry,” he was all smiles.
