Synopsis: Pedestrians, perhaps the largest unorganised section of citizens, are deprived of footpaths — pavements to walk safely and with dignity. The Supreme Court has now asserted that the right to walk on safe, demarcated footpaths is a fundamental right under the rights to free movement and life. But are the footpaths in your city available for pedestrians?

As if parking vehicles and dumping garbage on footpaths were not enough, construction materials, too, find space on walkways, making life difficult for pedestrians in Bengaluru.

Keerthivas, who took a stroll in the upmarket Jayanagar neighbourhood, came across gravel spread over the footpath. A wrong step here will lead to that sinking feeling followed by a sharp, painful experience.
