The Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd has commenced commercial production of green soda ash. Part of the Singapore-based AM International, the company that manufactures soda ash, achieved this by leveraging cutting-edge carbon-capture technology.

To produce green soda ash, TFL set up a CO2 Recovery Plant. The plant captures carbon from coal used as fuel in its boiler for steam production. It is then converted into biomass fuel to eliminate fossil fuel usage, thus achieving carbon neutrality in the manufacturing process. Further, TFL also uses green ammonium to produce its near-zero soda ash, a statement said.

The project aligns with the AM International’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives towards producing greener product solutions. “It is a matter of great pride to achieve this carbon-neutral milestone. It aligns with our ESG vision of producing greener product solutions for our customers. Our larger goal is to contribute to a cleaner environment,” said Ashwin Muthiah, founder-chairman of AM International.

The company has already tied up with one of the world’s largest multinational companies for the supply of green soda ash in the manufacture of detergents.

“With the latest accomplishment, Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd has taken a step towards the AM International’s commitment to the circular economy, and a cleaner, more sustainable future,” the statement said.

Soda ash aka Sodium Carbonate is a key ingredient in a wide array of products such as laundry detergents and rechargeable batteries. Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Ltd is the sole and largest producer of soda ash in South India. This project to make near-zero soda ash is an endeavour to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
