Synopsis: Two women journalists, Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, were allegedly assaulted by Delhi Police personnel while reporting in Saket. Amid allegations of inaction against Hindutva activists who attacked CJP protesters at Jantar Mantar, the Delhi Police has again come under fire after personnel at the Saket Police Station allegedly violently assaulted two women journalists.
Journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan were allegedly assaulted by the police officials while they were reporting about the inauguration of a new wing at the Max Hospital in Saket by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
According to a joint statement by the Press Club of India, the Indian Women’s Press Corps, the Delhi Union of Journalists, the Press Association, and the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, the two Muslim journalists were attacked by police officials after confirming their religious identities.
The press organisations said the Saket Station House Officer (SHO) was among the officials who assaulted the journalists.
“The two journalists were first manhandled at the spot by a group of Delhi Police personnel from the Saket Police Station, and then they were dragged into a police vehicle and taken to the Saket Police Station,” the joint statement said.
In a post on X, 4PM News Network, for which Shaheen works, said she was trying to ask questions to the Delhi CM when she was allegedly dragged by police officials to a vehicle, beaten up and taken to the police station.

The joint statement by the media organisations also alleged that the attack against the journalists intensified after the police officials determined their religious identities.
“Upon reaching the police station, the SHO allegedly instructed police officials to take the two journalists to a room, where women officers also joined, and started beating Shaheen and Nafisa. The police officials then determined their religious identity and escalated their attacks, reportedly hurling religion-specific abuses at the two,” the statement read.
Both women suffered multiple bruises and welts on their bodies in the attack. The police officials also allegedly threatened to file a case against both the journalists, according to the press organisations.
The Press Club of India and other organisations condemned the incident and sought an independent inquiry into the alleged assault and strict action against the officials involved.
“We call upon the Press Council of India to take suo motu cognisance of this matter and launch an independent investigation against the police officials who violently tried to suppress press freedom,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora has declared solidarity with the journalists. In a post on X, she called it a “communal attack” and said the AISA will make sure an FIR is filed against the police officials involved.
“With Shaheen and Nafisa who faced brutal assault at the hands of Delhi Police today.. we will ensure the FIR is filed against the communal and violent police personnel involved.This is nothing but a communal targeting of two Muslim Women Journalists simply for reporting the truth!” she said.
