Synopsis: The Cockroach Janta Party had announced a protest demanding action over the assault on activist Nishu Aazad’s father during a July NEET-UG protest. While an accused allegedly boasted of the attack and claimed political backing, Delhi Police rejected the allegations, saying the victim sustained only minor injuries.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has launched a fresh protest demanding justice for the father of a CJP worker who was brutally assaulted by alleged Hindutva activists during the July 20 agitation against the NEET-UG paper leak at Jantar Mantar.
The issue pertains to the assault on Sanjay Kumar (38), a resident of Ghaziabad and the father of CJP activist Nishu Aazad. Kumar reportedly sustained serious injuries to his head after being attacked by two alleged Hindutva activists, Suraj Kumar (24) and Swatantra Bhardwaj (21).
Both Kumar and Bhardwaj were taken into custody at the spot but were shortly let go by the police. The police claimed that the accused had been served notices and were interrogated.
The CJP leaders, however, alleged that the police refused to add serious charges against the accused, thereby protecting them from arrest.
“Sanjay ji’s skull was cracked open. The wound dimensions were of such great size that it obviously warranted an attempt to murder charge in the FIR (Section 307 of IPC)…The Police refused to add that charge. This section would’ve led to his immediate arrest as it is a cognisable and non-bailable offence. To avoid this arrest, the police flat out refused to add this section,” CJP leader Saurav Das said in a post on X.
Days after the incident, Bhardwaj went on a podcast and proudly boasted that he “cracked open the skull of” a CJP protester but “did not even go to jail” because he had the “blessings” of Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra.
Bhardwaj’s claims triggered widespread criticism from the CJP and opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, who questioned the functioning of the Delhi Police.
Extending solidarity to Nishu Azad, Gandhi said in a post on X, “Nishu, there’s no need to panic. I’m with you. It’s clear that you’re being targeted because you raise your voice for the rights of your community and students. Amit Shah’s Delhi Police, on one hand, commits inhuman brutality against students. On the other hand, the criminal who smashed the head of a Dalit girl’s father is roaming freely in the open.”

“From Day 1, we have not let any student or protester fight this battle alone. Nishu’s father Sanjay ji’s case is harrowing. Gang members like Swatantra Bhardwaj are openly flaunting that they attempted murder on Sanjay ji who was simply peacefully protesting for NEET students. Sanjay ji was brutally attacked and barely survived,” CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said in a post on X.
Announcing the protest, he said, “I, along with other Cockroach Janta Party members will reach the Parliament Street Police Station tomorrow at 10 AM and seek justice for Sanjay ji and Nishu.”

“There is clear admission on the record now. We will not allow Delhi Police to protect criminal gangs in our national capital!” he added.
Replying to his post, Nishu Azad said she will be present at the protest along with her father.
In a one-hour podcast in Hindi that is available on the YouTube channel ‘The casual talk’, Bhardwaj proudly explained the events that happened on July 20 and claimed that he did not have to go to jail because he had the blessings of senior BJP leaders, including Delhi Labour Minister Kapil Mishra.
“Nishu ke baap ka hum sir faade hain (I cracked open the skull of Nishu’s father),” he said.
Bhardwaj claimed Kumar could have lost his life in the assault and that charges of attempted murder applied to the crime he committed.
The self-proclaimed Hindutva activist proudly stated that even as Nishu told the police that she would take her own life if her father didn’t get justice, he did not have to go to jail for the assault.
“You know which section applies? 307. Half-murder. He needed 60 stitches on his head, okay? Bugger was almost dying in the ambulance. His daughter was standing outside the police station and saying that if my father does not get justice I will kill myself by consuming poison. Okay? Swatantra was out the next day. I did not even go to jail,” Bhardwaj said.
“The whole world should know, I didn’t even go to jail. I was roaming around all night,” he stressed.
He further claimed that he was let go by the Delhi Police after they got a call from Minister Kapil Mishra. He also claimed that he had the support of BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I have Hanumanji’s blessings. Also, Kapil Mishra is like my elder brother. They say a call came from Kapil Mishra and I was released. Kapil Mishra is my elder brother, Chirag Paswan is my elder brother, all of them. Tell me which leader you know? You know Modi ji? Modi ji is also my elder brother. I have everyone’s support,” he said.
He also admitted to roaming around the protest site and attacking students disguised as Delhi police personnel.
“Can you see my shoe? This shoe is Delhi police’s. I don’t fill up any form but automatically I roam around like Delhi police. My shoe is Delhi police’s, baton ,etc everything is Delhi police’s,” he said.
Amid allegations of complicity and submitting to political influence, Delhi Police rejected the claims raised by Bhardwaj and said that Kumar had sustained only a minor injury.
New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma claimed Kumar was injured by the kada (metal bracelet) worn by one of the accused and that, according to the medical examination conducted at the RML Hospital, the injuries were found to be “simple in nature.”
“The injuries were made by kada and not by any weapon. The misinformation regarding a crack in the skull is not supported by facts/MLC and is completely baseless,” the DCP said.
He also rejected charges of political influence, “Any allegation of undue influence or interference in the matter is factually incorrect and baseless. The matter has been dealt with strictly in accordance with law and procedures.”
