Delhi High Court orders restoration of CJP’s X account, says reason for block no longer valid
For the past 17 days, the group has been holding an uninterrupted protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Synopsis: The Delhi High Court has directed X to restore the account of the Cockroach Janata Party, which was blocked in May following a demand from the Centre claiming it could cause unrest among NEET aspirants. The court said the reason for the block was no longer valid as the examination process had ended. Meanwhile, the group’s protest in Delhi demanding Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation has entered its 17th day.
The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the restoration of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) account on X, weeks after it was blocked on the grounds that it could trigger unrest among students appearing for the NEET exams, Livelawreported.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma allowed a petition filed by CJP founder Abhijit Dipke, observing that with the examination process now over, the reason for the block was no longer valid.
“This is a big victory for free speech!” Dipke wrote in a post on X.
The account was blocked on 21 May. X stated that it had been withheld in “response to a legal demand”.
The satirical political group was founded by Dipke, then a student in the US, after remarks by Chief Justice Surya Kant comparing unemployed youth to “cockroaches” drew an immense following online within weeks.
The outfit has since positioned itself as a protest platform highlighting concerns around unemployment, corruption, and governance.
Protest demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation enters 17th day
For the past 17 days, the group has been holding an uninterrupted protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the handling of the NEET and CBSE Class XII board examinations.
Activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past nine days.
“Sonam sir has lost more than 6 kg of weight, and his blood pressure is also quite low. When will the government wake up?” Dipke wrote in a post on X.
He also alleged that police personnel had been recording women volunteers at the protest site.
“Why has the government asked the police to record women volunteers? Last night, some officials were caught taking photos of women volunteers. When confronted, they fled the spot,” he wrote in a post on X.
