Synopsis: The 35-day-long student-led protest has seen the government finally accept the students’ demands. Youth across the country were seen celebrating what they called “our victory” while saying that they will continue to hold the government accountable.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has announced the withdrawal of their agitation “in good faith” after what they termed the government’s acceptance of all their demands.

CJP spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das announced the decision at Delhi’s Constitution Club around three hours after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his “resignation” and after the third round of their talks with the government.

Besides this, the government has accepted the CJP’s demand that all FIRs against the protesters in BJP and states ruled by the BJP’s allies be withdrawn.

Additionally, Union Minister JP Nadda, who was at the press conference with his compatriot Jitendra Singh as the representatives from the Union Cabinet, announced that the government will fix a compensation for the families of those who had died by suicide following the NEET paper leak. The CJP had demanded that Rs 1 crore be paid for each of these families.

The CJP has also handed over a five-point charter of demands for the reform of the education system and said they will be meeting the government in a few weeks to follow up on the progress.

Pradhan decision a first in many ways

Earlier, Pradhan had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his decision in a post on X.

The enormity of Pradhan’s removal and the success of India’s youth who were protesting against the broken education system and the paper leaks can be gauged by the fact that this is probably the first dismissal of such a senior minister under public pressure, Earlier, in October 2018, MJ Akbar had to quit his post following the MeToo scandal, but he was only serving as the Minister of State for External Affairs then.

Pradhan’s announcement came on the 35th day of the student-led protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi welcomed Pradhan’s resignation in a video, but said two demands were pending.

“Pradhan’s resignation is a huge step in rebuilding our education system… And I want to congratulate every single student, every single youngster who came out on the streets and fought for democracy, fought for the future of this country and defended the constitution. I’m proud of you. Well done,” Rahul said in a video.

“It’s also a signal to other parts of society, farmers, labourers, poor people, anybody who this regime is attacking and oppressing. There is wisdom and courage in standing up. Daro mat (Fear not). Let’s get rid of this regime that is attacking India, destroying our constitution, capturing all our institutions.

“Let me remind the government there are still two demands outstanding. The first one and most important one, anybody who has raised a finger on our students, beaten them, shot at them has to be held accountable. People who’ve organised it, people who’ve implemented it, all of them have to be punished. And the final demand that the Prime Minister of India, out of respect for the students of India, out of respect for the future of India, has to apologise to the students who were brutalised and attacked,” he went on to say.

Many protesters began celebrating what they saw as the government’s capitulation before their resilience and fearlessness.
