Nothing quite beats retiring as chief secretary in Andhra Pradesh. And the corridors of the Velagapudi secretariat have witnessed great heartburn among those who do not make it to the top bureaucratic post before retirement.

The reason is simple: The YSRCP government “honours” retired chief secretaries with plum posts immediately after they hang up their boots.

Barring, LV Subramanyam, who was sent out unceremoniously, those who succeeded him — Nilam Sawhney and Adityanath Das — were handed prized posts immediately after their retirement.

It is no different in the case of the current outgoing chief secretary Sameer Sharma. The government has not only named him as chief executive to the CM, an altogether newly-created position, he has also been handed chairmanship of the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board.

Do remember that all this has come on top of the two extensions he was given after his scheduled retirement last year.

Earlier, Aditya Nath Das, a 1987 batch IAS officer, was appointed chief advisor to the Government of Andhra Pradesh — with his office at AP Bhavan in New Delhi — after his superannuation on 30 September last year.

Nilam Sawhney was initially appointed as principal advisor to the chief minister in the rank of Cabinet minister upon her retirement in December 2020. Later, she was made State Election Commissioner.
