Leaders in Andhra Pradesh are yet to respond to the brutality in Manipur.

The Hamletian dilemma, “To be or not to be”, grips political parties in Andhra Pradesh when it comes to matters pertaining to the BJP and the Union government.

Take, for instance, the beastly act of a group of tribal men parading two women of another tribe naked in Manipur. The video of the incident shocked the collective conscience of the country, and politicians of all hues, including the prime minister, condemned the beastly act.

Politicians in Andhra Pradesh, however, are a different lot. Despite speaking volumes about upholding women’s rights and dignity, the three major regional parties in Andhra Pradesh are silent on the despicable crime in Manipur, a state ruled by the BJP.

Leaders of the ruling YSRCP, the main Opposition TDP, and the BJP-ally Jana Sena are maintaining a stoic silence in all languages they know.

“There is no need for the parties to take sides. But they can condemn the incident of a mob parading and abusing naked women. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. It’s so disgusting,” a political analyst observed.

The YSRCP has been supporting all Bills presented in Parliament, in an apparent bid to appease the national leaders and get more funds for the state. The TDP, on the other hand, is trying to strike an alliance with the BJP ahead of the 2024 polls. Neither party is in the mood to antagonise the BJP.

Language is defined as a means to communicate. Silence, as the Andhra politicians prove, is the language of appeasement.
