Lakshmi Narayana

Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer VV Lakshmi Narayana, popularly known as JD Lakshmi Narayana for his famous stint as CBI joint director in combined Andhra Pradesh, has dropped enough hints that he will contest again from Vizag in the 2024 general election.

This should worry TDP’s prospective Lok Sabha candidate in Vizag more than anyone else. TDP leaders in Vizag are already calculating the risk if Lakshmi Narayana is in the fray.

Lakshmi Narayana contested from the Vizag Lok Sabha seat on a Jana Sena ticket in 2019 — and lost.

But he received nearly 23 percent of the votes cast, and fatally harmed the chances of TDP candidate M Bharath, co-brother of TDP scion Nara Lokesh. Bharath lost to the YSRCP candidate MVV Satyanarayana by a razor-thin margin of just over 2,000 votes.

Bharath would have romped home and entered Parliament if Lakshmi Narayana had not entered the fray and eaten away 2,88,874 votes, the majority of which would have gone to the TDP in his absence.

Bharath, like Lokesh, was making his political debut. He is the grandson of two prominent Andhra politicians: Former Vizag MP MVVS Murthy, the founder of the renowned educational institution GITAM, and veteran Congress leader Kavuri Sambasiva Rao.

Lakshmi Narayana announced his intention to run again in Vizag at a meeting in Kakinada a few days ago, but he has not revealed on which party’s ticket he would contest. Or whether he will contest as an independent candidate.
