Kicking off his campaign for the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, Jana Sena president Pawan Kalyan on Wednesday, 14 June, dared his rivals to prevent him from entering the Assembly after the polls.

He also said that he would accept the position of chief minister if it was offered to him.

He was addressing his maiden public meeting from atop the Varahi, a special campaign vehicle, at Kathipudi Junction in the Prathipadu constituency in the East Godavari district of the state.

The matinee idol-turned-politician said his rivals defeated him in both the places from where he contested in the last election — Gajuwaka and Bhimavaram — and it was out of spite.

Picking up the gauntlet for the Assembly elections next year, he asked the ruling YSRCP: “This time I will see who stops me from entering the Assembly. Stop me if you have the guts.”

He continued: “They are asking me to come to the electoral battleground alone. I do not know whether I would come all by myself or along with others, but one thing is certain: No one is going to prevent me from entering Assembly this time.”

He predicted that Assembly elections would be held in November-December this year, contrary to the claims of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy that there was no scope for early elections.

He said this time around, he would adopt any strategy necessary to remain in the Assembly.

“My entire political activity will be in Andhra Pradesh. I know fully well the dark plans of those who are criticising me. But out of decency, I am not exposing them,” said Pawan Kalyan, who is also eyeing a foray in neighbouring, having appointed a few constituency in-charges.

“The Jana Sena is not afraid of the YSRCP. At a time when all other parties were scared of saying a word against the YSRCP, it was the Jana Sena that had the courage to stand up to the ruling party,” he said.

“I want all of you to know how much the Jana Sena has grown in strength in the last few years. The YSRCP, which has 151 seats in the Assembly, is shivering at the sight of the Jana Sena, which does not have even one seat. That is why the YSRCP is targeting us day and night,” said Pawan Kalyan, adding that it is only the Jana Sena that could measure up to YSRCP going forward.

‘Amaravati will remain the capital’

Asserting that Amaravati would remain the capital of Andhra Pradesh, the actor-turned-politician asked Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy how he managed to amass wealth worth thousands of crores of rupees.

“My issue is with those who have made huge amounts of money through dubious methods. No one has the guts to question the chief minister’s deeds of corruption. My only intention is that the one who is ruling his subjects should be honest and a man of probity,” said Pawan Kalyan.

“In a democracy, it is necessary that one should question the leader if is resorting to corruption. Regardless of one’s position, one has to face punishment if one is guilty of committing crimes,” he added.

Elaborating on his commitment to public service, he said that he was doing films only to sustain the party.

“Running the party for 10 years is not easy. Even if you have ₹10,000 core, you cannot do it unless you have an ideology that connects with the people. I built the party office with money that I saved for my children. This chief minister hates me so much that he had stooped to the level of obstructing my movies and even imposing curbs on the pricing of their tickets,” he said.

Accusing the YSRCP of not implementing its promises, Pawan Kalyan said the state government had not kept its word on ensuring prohibition.

The ruling party had promised to do away with the new contributory pension scheme, but did not do it, he added.

The party was responsible for farmers dying by suicide and disapproved of the campaign that the agitation for Amaravati was being spearheaded by one caste, he said.
