Synopsis: Bhogapuram’s proposed Aerocity is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. It will also strengthen North Andhra’s export economy.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicates the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram to the nation on August 1, Andhra Pradesh will witness much more than the inauguration of another airport. The Airport will mark the beginning of a new development chapter where modern infrastructure becomes the foundation for investment, employment, exports and regional prosperity. For North Andhra, Bhogapuram is not merely an aviation project; it is a catalyst that will reshape the region’s economic future.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently maintained that air travel should not remain the privilege of a few but become accessible to every Indian. Over the past twelve years, that vision has transformed India’s aviation landscape. Aviation is no longer viewed simply as a transport service; it has become a key driver of commerce, tourism, manufacturing and national integration.
The scale of this transformation is remarkable. India had only 74 operational airports before 2014. Today, that number has crossed 150, while annual passenger traffic has increased from nearly six crore to over twenty crore. The UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme has made affordable air travel a reality for more than 1.3 crore passengers across over 500 regional routes, connecting smaller cities and remote regions with the national economy. Simultaneously, massive investments in airport infrastructure have positioned India among the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
Andhra Pradesh has been a major beneficiary of this aviation expansion. Airports at Vijayawada, Tirupati, Kurnool, Rajamahendravaram and Kadapa have been upgraded with modern infrastructure, expanded runways and improved navigation systems. These investments have strengthened industrial growth, tourism and business connectivity across the state while improving access for passengers and cargo alike. Among these developments, Bhogapuram occupies a special place.
Visakhapatnam’s commercial aviation has long operated under the limitations of a naval airport, restricting future expansion despite the city’s emergence as a major centre for information technology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, shipping, education and tourism. A dedicated international airport became an economic necessity rather than merely an infrastructure requirement. The idea of a greenfield airport near Visakhapatnam dates back to the tenure of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the late 1990s. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and the lessons of Cyclone Hudhud, Bhogapuram emerged as the ideal location for a future-ready international airport. After regaining momentum under the NDA government, the project progressed rapidly through close coordination between the Centre and the State.
Jana Sena Party President and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has consistently championed the cause of balanced regional development, with particular emphasis on the long-neglected regions of Andhra Pradesh. Recognising the transformative potential of the Bhogapuram airport for North Andhra, he made sustained efforts to ensure the project’s timely completion through continuous coordination and policy support. He also played a significant role in the decision to name the airport after the legendary freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, ensuring that this landmark infrastructure project reflects the region’s rich history and enduring spirit of sacrifice.
Constructed over nearly 2,700 acres with an estimated investment exceeding ₹4,500 crore, the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is designed to international standards. Its 3.8-kilometre Code 4E runway can handle wide-body international aircraft, while the first phase has the capacity to serve six million passengers annually. Considering the east coast’s vulnerability to cyclones, the airport incorporates resilient engineering standards and an advanced drainage system to ensure uninterrupted operations during extreme weather.
The airport’s true significance, however, extends well beyond passenger movement.
Around modern airports grow logistics parks, cargo terminals, hospitality centres, commercial districts, aircraft maintenance facilities and aviation training institutes. Bhogapuram has been envisioned as such an integrated aviation ecosystem. Its proposed Aerocity is expected to attract substantial private investment while generating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The airport will also strengthen North Andhra’s export economy. Pharmaceuticals, seafood, textiles, horticulture and floriculture will gain faster access to global markets. Agricultural produce from Araku and Paderu, cashew from Srikakulam, mangoes from Vizianagaram and marine products from the Visakhapatnam coast will benefit from improved cargo connectivity. Tourism too will receive a major boost as better international access promotes the region’s beaches, Buddhist heritage, tribal culture and eco-tourism destinations.
More importantly, Bhogapuram reflects a broader development philosophy. Infrastructure is no longer being created merely for connectivity but as an economic asset that attracts industries, creates employment and reduces regional disparities. Highways, railways, ports and airports together form the backbone of a modern economy, and Bhogapuram is a significant addition to that national vision.
As the first aircraft takes off from the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport, it will carry far more than passengers. It will carry the aspirations of millions in North Andhra who have long awaited world-class infrastructure capable of unlocking the region’s true potential. The inauguration of Bhogapuram is therefore not merely the opening of an airport; it is the opening of new opportunities for investment, enterprise and inclusive development, firmly placing North Andhra on India’s evolving global growth map.
