Andhra Pradesh to review aspirational districts and blocks to tackle poverty at the root

At a press meet held at the AP Secretariat in Velagapudi, Lanka Dinakar, Chairman of the Twenty Point Programme Implementation, highlighted India’s progress in poverty alleviation and Andhra Pradesh’s role in it.

He cited a dramatic drop in the extreme poverty rate – from 16.2 percent in 2011–12 to 2.3 percent by 2022–23 – attributing it to central reforms, targeted welfare schemes, and direct benefit transfers worth ₹45 lakh crore to over 55 crore Jan Dhan accounts.

Dinakar emphasised the importance of “Aspirational Districts” and “Aspirational Blocks,” which are identified based on socioeconomic deprivation and poor infrastructure.

Andhra Pradesh has three such districts – ASR, Parvathipuram Manyam, and YSR Kadapa – along with 15 blocks among the 500 designated nationally by NITI Aayog. Satya Sai and Prakasam districts are also being considered for inclusion.

With the support of both the central government and the “double engine” leadership of CM Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, Andhra Pradesh aims to converge resources, collaborate with development partners, and foster healthy competition to uplift backward regions.

A detailed review of these districts and blocks will soon track progress across 49 key indicators, from maternal health to rural connectivity.
