In what appeared like an act of retaliation for the demolition of Praja Vedika in Amravati in 2019, the Capital Regional Development Authority (CRDA), apparently under the instructions of the TDP government, pulled down a building under construction in Tadepalli in erstwhile Guntur district meant for housing the YSRCP central office in the wee hours of Saturday, 22 June.

At about 5 AM, proclaimers and bulldozers reached the building under construction and with the policemen standing guard, the officials supervised the demolition.

The building, whose second-floor construction was in progress, located in Sithanagaram in the Tadepalli area was pulled down by officials labelling it as an illegal construction.

The police had closed the gates of the building to prevent party workers and leaders from entering the premises.

After coming to power in 2019, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had Praja Vedika pulled down on the ground that its construction violated the provisions of the River Conservation Act as it is right on the banks of the Krishna River.

Praja Vedika was built close to Naidu’s residence for conducting official meetings.

YSRCP moves the court

Now, the YSRCP has moved the High Court as soon as the CRDA issued proceedings for the demolition of the YSRCP office building. The YSRCP also brought to the notice of the CRDA that they had moved the court against its proceedings.

Though the petition was before the court, the CRDA officials razed the building, the YSRCP sources said.

The YSRCP is getting ready to move another petition in the court, that despite the issue being in the court, the CRDA had razed the structure.

“The demolition proceeded even though the YSRCP had approached the High Court the previous day (Friday), challenging the preliminary actions of the CRDA (Capital Region Development Authority),” a YSRCP statement said.

YSRCP noted that the court had ordered a halt to any demolition activity, which was conveyed to the CRDA commissioner by a party lawyer, but the authority still went ahead and demolished the structure.

According to YSRCP, CRDA’s action amounts to contempt of court.

‘Reign of destruction’

Taking a serious exception to the demolition, YSRCP supremo and former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, in a message on X, said that reign of destruction has begun in AP under the leadership of chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

He said that the YSRCP building which is almost nearing completion has been pulled down, in utter disregard to the instructions of the High Court to the contrary.

“Already lawlessness had become the order of the day in the state. Naidu, who had allowed blood-letting of the YSRCP workers after the Assembly elections has now resorted to demolition of the building. This is indicative that the next five years of Naidu’s rule would be marked by violence.”

He, however, said that the acts of vindictive politics and threats could not cow down the YSRCP. “We will not turn our back. We will fight till the very end, on behalf and for the people. All those who believe in democracy across the nation should condemn Naidu’s actions which have malfide intentions,” he said.

The YSRCP sources suspect that the TDP had the building razed as it is right on the road that Chandrababu Naidu takes from his Undavalli Residence to the TDP Office in Mangalagiri as he cannot even bear even its sight.

TDP responds

According to a statement released by the TDP, the YSRCP office was demolished based on a complaint lodged by a TDP leader that it was being allegedly built illegally on Irrigation Department land.

The complaint was lodged with the commissioners of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) and Mangalagiri Tadepalli Municipal Corporation (MTMC) that the opposition party office was being built illegally on two acres of Irrigation Department land, a TDP release said.

“Following this, the demolition of these illegal constructions of the YSRCP leaders has been launched under the supervision of the MTMC officials,” it said.

According to the ruling party, former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had allotted that parcel of land in survey number 202/A1 in Tadepalli, misusing his power.

“Jagan Mohan Reddy has prepared a plan to occupy the neighbouring 15 acres by building the party office in these two acres. It is now clarified that the Irrigation Department has not given the clearance to hand over these two acres to the YSRCP,” the release added.

Responding to YS Jagan’s post on X, the official handle of the TDP retorted, “Instead of building a water plant for people’s need, you are accepting you built (the structure), after encroaching on fishermen’s land. Do you expect us to leave your encroachments?”
