Chiranjeevi NDA

Actor-politician and Kapu stalwart Chiranjeevi Konidela, on Sunday, 21 April, extended support to the NDA in Andhra Pradesh ahead of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state.

In a video statement, he was seen asking people to support NDA candidates CM Ramesh and Panchakarla Ramesh Babu.

The move comes amidst the claims of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) that he was still a part of the grand old party.

“After years of political disinterest, I’m back discussing politics, spurred by the alliance between the Jana Sena, TDP, and the BJP,” he said.

He further said: “For the development of Andhra Pradesh, consider voting for NDA candidates, especially my close associates CM Ramesh and Panchakarla Ramesh Babu.”

CM Ramesh is the BJP candidate for the Anakapalli Lok Sabha constituency and Ramesh Babu is the Jana Sena candidate for the Pendurthi Assembly segment.

Elections to the Lok Sabha and the state Assembly in Andhra Pradesh will be held simultaneously on 13 May.

The TDP, Jana Sena and the BJP are contesting the elections in alliance while the ruling YSRCP is going alone. The Congress is contesting in alliance with the CPI and the CPI(M).

The Kapu votes in Andhra

The veteran actor belongs to the Kapu community in the state, which forms one of the major castes that decides the electoral fate in the state.

The Kapu leaders have been nursing their hopes for a chief minister from their community for long. They had hoped for the same when Chiranjeevi had floated his party Praja Rajyam.

However, the party was merged with the Congress in 2011.

With his brother Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena contesting the elections with the BJP and the TDP, the Kapu hopes for a better representation has again gained ground in Andhra Pradesh.
