The elusive cattle lifting tiger that had a reign of terror in Cheeral and other villages of Wayanad was captured after a 26-day hunt, amid massive protests by residents.

The 10-year-old male feline had wreaked havoc by killing over a dozen cows and mauling several others in the last one month. Forest department officials had set up traps.

The tiger finally took the bait early on Friday morning after it walked into a trap cage with a live calf.

The tiger has been shifted to a hospice and palliative care unit for big cats in Pachadi, Sultan Bathery.
