The situation in Srirangapatna turned volatile after some Hindu activists tried to forcibly enter the Jama Masjid on Sunday, 4 December. Several hundred people taking part in the Hanuma Mala yatra tried to break a police barricade. The police, however, managed to thwart their attempt. During the yatra, miscreants also uprooted a green flag atop a house and replaced it with a saffron flag. Police said they were probing the incident. Hindu activists have claimed that the Jama Masjid, built in 1782, was constructed on the ruins of a Hanuman temple.
