The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance candidate and senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan cruised to a thumping victory in the Erode East bypolls.

Elangovan won with a record margin leaving AIADMK candidate KS Thennarasu trailing by over 50,000 votes.

In an exclusive chat with South First’s Vinodh Arulappan, Elangovan said it was a victory for secular forces.

The Asembly seat fell vacant after its MLA from Congress Thirumagan Evera passed away in January this year.

The Congress party fielded his father, EVKS Elangovan in the byelections.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK Chief MK Stalin said the victory was a public endorsement of the Dravidian model of governance and also claimed it was a prelude to 2024.
