Bengaluru metro rush peaks: No space to stand!

Daily commuters in Bengaluru’s Namma Metro continue to struggle with severe overcrowding during peak hours — 9 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm. Passengers often find it difficult not only to get a seat but even to secure standing space inside packed trains.

Although BMRCL has expanded the metro network with new lines, crowd management remains a major concern on both the Purple and Green lines.

Since operations began in 2011, Namma Metro moved from three-coach trains to six-coach trains, with the first six-coach train launched in June 2018 and the full fleet updated by January 2020.

However, the platforms were originally constructed at around 135 metres, allowing a maximum of six coaches. Adding more is impossible without major infrastructure changes, leaving the metro system struggling to keep up with Bengaluru’s rapid population and ridership growth.
