Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal sparked a row on Saturday, May 11, asking if Prime Minister Narendra Modi would retire once he turns 75 years of age.

He was addressing a rally a day after being released on interim bail from Tihar jail.

Mentioning that Modi would be turning 75 in September 2025, the Delhi chief minister asked whether Union Minister Amit Shah would take over as the prime minister.

Referring to the BJP’s rule that people would be retired after turning 75, he said, “Modi ji is turning 75 in September next year. He had made the rule that people aged 75 would be retired.”

Kejriwal cited the examples of retired leaders including LK Advani and Sumitra Mahajan to ask whether it was the reason why the prime minister has been seeking votes for Amit Shah.

“He (PM Modi) will retire next year. He is seeking votes for making Amit Shah the prime minister. Will Shah fulfill Modiji”s guarantee?” asked Kejriwal.

No age rule in BJP: Shah

Responding to the AAP leader’s comment, Union Minister Amit Shah denied that any age rule is mentioned in the BJP’s constitution.

Addressing a press conference in Telangana’s Hyderabad, Shah said, “There is no need for the Opposition to be happy about Modiji turning 75. It is not written in the Constitution of the BJP that Modiji cannot become the prime minister,” the home minister said.

“He will again become the prime minister and complete the term,” he further said.

Shah also said that, in Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party was set to win the highest number of seats in the South.

Special treatment to PM: Sanjay Singh

Meanwhile, AAP leader and MP Sanjay Singh insisted that the prime minister clarified the party’s ’75 years retirement formula’.

He also accused the BJP leaders of giving special treatment to the prime minister and acting like he was above the party’s rules.

“They (BJP leaders, including Shah) said whatever rule PM Modi has made, it will be implemented on other leaders but not on Modi,” he said.

Singh further added that Modi should clarify whether he was greedy for the post of prime minister. “PM Modi should clarify the age rule made by him. He should also clarify whether he is greedy for the post of PM,” Singh said.

Leaders across political parties have been vigorously campaigning in states like Telangana, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh ahead of the fourth phase of voting for Lok Sabha elections scheduled for Monday, 13 May.
