Tamil Nadu rains

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has sounded an orange alert for six districts even as heavy thundershowers continued to batter Tamil Nadu on Thursday, 23 November.

The weather department further predicted moderate to heavy rains across the state while issuing the orange alert to the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai and Pudukottai districts.

A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in nine districts: Tiruvallur, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, and Pudukottai.

The weather department also predicted incessant rains at isolated places in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipettai, Vellore, Thirupattur, and Thiruvannamalai districts.

Heavy rainfall has been predicted in the districts along the Western Ghats until 25 November.

The Meteorological Centre said a trough of low-pressure area in the easterly running over the Comorin area to the westcentral Bay of Bengal off the Andhra Pradesh coast was causing rainfall throughout Tamil Nadu.

The Centre also predicted cyclonic circulations over Tamil Nadu.

The Union Territory of Puducherry, including Karaikal, too, witnessed heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department predicted that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the south Andaman Sea and its neighbourhood around Sunday (25 November) and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea next week.
