Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw honored with Jamsetji Tata Award

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson of Biocon Group, has been awarded the prestigious Jamsetji Tata Award by the Indian Society for Quality (ISQ).

The award recognises her pioneering contributions to the biosciences sector in India and her relentless commitment to quality, which has propelled Biocon to a leading global position.

The Jamsetji Tata Award, instituted in 2004 by ISQ, honours individuals who have demonstrated excellence in leadership, quality, and significant contributions to society, much like Jamsetji Tata, regarded as the ‘Father of Modern Indian Industry.’ The award was presented during the ISQ Annual Conference 2024 in Bengaluru.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw received the award from Janak Kumar Mehta, President of ISQ & Chairman of TQM International; B Muthuraman, former Vice Chairman of Tata Steel; and Dr. KN Subramanya, Principal of R V College of Engineering and President of ISQ’s Bengaluru Chapter. 

Mehta praised Mazumdar-Shaw for her role in establishing Biocon and shaping the biosciences industry in India, emphasising her impact not just on business but also on society.

He stated, “This award recognises those who have not only excelled in business but have also contributed significantly to the broader community. Kiran’s work has brought India to the global map.”

Pioneer in the biotech sector 

In her acceptance speech, Mazumdar-Shaw expressed deep gratitude for the honour. “I am humbled to accept the 2024 Jamsetji Tata Award, named after one of India’s greatest visionaries. His legacy of excellence and innovation continues to inspire me in my work at Biocon,” she said. 

“This award is a testament to the collective effort of the exceptional team at Biocon, who share my passion for excellence and a commitment to delivering high-quality products and services.”

A pioneer in India’s biotech sector, Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon, which has become a global leader in biopharmaceuticals. Her vision and leadership have earned her recognition as a trailblazer in science and healthcare, with a focus on making quality healthcare affordable and accessible to millions.

Mazumdar-Shaw’s achievements have earned her numerous national and international accolades, including the Padma Shri (1989), Padma Bhushan (2005), and the Order of Australia in 2020. 

She was named EY World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2020 and was honoured with the Othmer Gold Medal in 2014. In the same year, she was awarded the Global Economy Prize by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany.

The ISQ is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting quality management principles and practices. The Jamsetji Tata Award is presented to industry leaders who have made significant contributions to India’s societal development with an unwavering focus on quality. Past recipients include prominent figures such as Nandan Nilekani, Co-Founder and Chairman of Infosys; TV Narendran, CEO of Tata Steel; and Jairam Varadaraj, Managing Director of Elgi Equipments Ltd.
