Chennai’s The Dancers Club suspends CEO amid #MeToo allegations, launches internal review

Synopsis: The Dancers Club, a prominent Chennai-based dance group, has suspended its CEO Suren Rajendran with immediate effect following multiple allegations of sexual harassment made by former dancers on social media. The club stated that an internal inquiry has also been launched.

The Dancers Club, a Chennai-based dance group, has suspended its CEO Suren Rajendran with immediate effect following a wave of #MeToo allegations made by former dancers on social media.

The group announced that an internal investigation has been launched and said the matter is being handled with seriousness and diligence.

The controversy broke out on 19 July, when former dancers from TDC began sharing accounts on Instagram, accusing Suren of sexual harassment during their time at the group.

In the days following, more former dancers came forward with similar allegations, adding to the growing number of testimonies.

One particularly disturbing aspect of the testimonies is that many of the women alleged they were targeted by Suren when they were in Class 11 or 12, prompting widespread shock and outrage.

In an official statement issued by Arnold Charles on behalf of The Dancers Club, the group said that no formal complaints had been received from dancers or their parents prior to the recent social media posts.

However, it acknowledged the gravity of the accusations and stated that it does not condone any form of misconduct.

“To uphold the principle of natural justice and to avoid any conflict of interest, Suren has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry,” the statement read.

TDC reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for dancers, students, and collaborators.

The club also said it would not hesitate to take appropriate action if the ongoing inquiry reveals any misconduct involving TDC or its leadership.

The allegations

The Chennai Dancers Club is a well-known dance school and performance group that offers paid dance services for films, private events, music shows, and more, while also functioning as an academy training aspiring dancers.

The group was founded and is operated by Suren, Arnold, and Anusha, and is recognised within Chennai’s dance community.

Recently, a former dancer from the group shared screenshots of WhatsApp conversations with founder Suren on Instagram, tagging the post with the hashtag #MeToo.

In the chats, Suren is seen repeatedly asking intimate and personal questions, even after the woman clearly expressed discomfort. The screenshots suggest that Suren continued the inappropriate conversation deliberately, despite her objections.

She also shared a photograph in which she alleged Suren had sexually harassed her.

Following her post, several current and former dancers who trained or worked with TDC have come forward on Instagram to share their own accounts of harassment.
