Yogendra Yadav predicts landslide victory for Congress in Telangana

Activist and psephologist Yogendra Yadav has predicted a resounding victory for the Congress in the 30 November elections to the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

Talking to reporters in Hyderabad on Friday, 24 November, Yadav acknowledged speculations about a hung Assembly.

However, the convener of the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan insisted that “at this moment, it is not a breeze, but a full-fledge Congress wave is surging across the state”.

He said: “Our colleagues from various parts, friends from the corners of Telangana, and I, myself, have observed unmistakable signs that the Telangana election is decisively inclined, with the people expressing their unequivocal decision that 10 years had been sufficient, and a change was imperative. They are poised to cast their votes in favour of the Congress party.”

Victory will surprise everyone

Yadav further opined that the Congress’s victory margin would surprise everyone in India, and it would even impact the country.

He said people have different reasons to vote against the BRS. Corruption and nepotism are rampant, and the ruling party did not deliver the promised Golden Telangana or government jobs. “People also feel that the (BRS) MLAs are arrogant, and they are thinking of a change.”

Regarding the changing dynamics, he mentioned, “A few months ago, the gap between both parties was six percent. Last month it was four percent, and till last week it was one percent. But now it has changed, and the margin right now is four percent, and by the time of the polling, it can be six percent.”

Yadav explained the strategic importance of being in Telangana, stating, “We are in Telangana because the election here is the first step towards the upcoming 2024 general election. Telangana can be the second gate for the BJP to enter South India. Also, the BJP is now not directly coming to Telangana; they are trying through the BRS.”

“In the Parliament election, the BJP and the BRS will be one. That’s why Bharat Jodo Abhiyan, like in Karnataka, has come up with the civil societies’ platform to intervene in the election so that the BJP and the BRS can be defeated,” he said.

He further opined that money could not alter the people’s decision to vote for a change.

The issues

Kiran Kumar Vissa, the convener of the Telangana Peoples’ Joint Action Committee, shared insights from his organisation’s voter engagements

“When the people from our organisation visited the voters, they found out that the issues of unemployment are quite prevalent among the people. Schools are being affected, and the existing schools lack available teachers,” he explained.

“People have not received double-bedroom houses, and money from the Dalit Bandhu scheme is allegedly going to those close to the party leaders. Some individuals who received ₹10 lakh under the scheme, reportedly had to pay ₹2-3 lakh to brokers. Rythu Bandhu is appreciated, but the marginalised farmers are not benefiting from it,” Vissa said.

“People in urban pockets are unhappy due to concerns over drainage systems, monsoons, and rains. Housing is a significant issue among the urban population, with the promised double bedrooms undelivered to many despite a constant influx of the rural population. Women’s safety remains unresolved in the state,” he pointed out.
