‘Workers thrown a few meters away due to blast’: Eyewitnesses on Pashamylaram explosion in Telangana

Several workers were reportedly near the reactor when it exploded. Many of the labourers employed at the unit were migrants from Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and other states.

Explosion at chemical factory

Synopsis: A reactor explosion at Sigachi Chemical factory in Sangareddy district, Telangana, on 30 June killed 12 and injured 35. Eyewitnesses described the blast as so powerful that workers were thrown several metres into the air. The explosion caused a massive fire and building collapse. Rescue teams estimate 60–120 workers were present, with 11 fire stations and 3 DRF units deployed.

The incident caused by blast of a reactor led to massive fire and collapse of the building.

Speaking to the media, eyewitnesses described the horrifying impact of the explosion at the industrial unit, saying the blast was so intense that workers were tossed into the air and thrown several metres away.

The manufacturing unit collapsed under the force of the explosion, and the resulting fire quickly spread to adjoining buildings within the factory premises.

Several workers were reportedly near the reactor when it exploded. Many of the labourers employed at the unit were migrants from Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and other states.

Addressing the media at the site, Patancheru MLA Mahipal Reddy alleged that the company was operating without proper safety measures. “The company is running without any safety precautions. Many people have been injured and have died,” he said, further accusing the management of not revealing the actual number of casualties.

Reddy demanded compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of the deceased and job support for the kin of both the injured and those who lost their lives in the incident.

Rescue operations

While the firefighters had reached the spot, and were trying to control the fire, the injured have been shifted to the nearby hospitals, and are currently receiving treatment. Rescue teams, fearing that some workers might still be trapped under the debris, deployed earthmovers to clear the wreckage of the collapsed structure.

Telangana Fire Service DG, Nagireddy claimed that due to factory manager’s death, it has become difficult to ascertain the number of workers.

He added, “As rescue operations continue, it is estimated that between 60 and 120 people were present at the site during the incident. So far, 35 individuals are receiving treatment, two have died in the hospital, and ten more bodies have been found at the site. A total of 11 fire stations and three Disaster Response Force (DRF) units have been mobilised for the ongoing efforts.”
