UoH shares a photo of wildlife on campus

Synopsis: On April 8, 2025, the University of Hyderabad’s social media page shared wildlife photos for its 2025 calendar amid the ongoing Kancha Gachibowli land dispute. The photos, showcasing a peacock, spotted deer, and a peninsular rock agama, highlighted the campus’s biodiversity. This comes as the Telangana government faces criticism over land privatisation plans and the environmental impact, prompting Supreme Court intervention.

The University of Hyderabad on Tuesday, 8 April, shared a photo of wildlife from the university premises on their X handle, amid the ongoing Kancha Gachibowli land dispute.

The university shared two pictures that were selected for the month of April in the 2025 university calendar. One picture is of a peacock and a spotted deer, while the other one is a peninsular rock agama (also called South Indian rock agama).

They wrote on X: “Picture selected for the #UniversityOfHyderabad Calendar 2025 for the month of April 2025. These have been clicked inside the university premises. Picture credit: Prince Bharti & Raghu Ghanpuram.”

Earlier in January, the officials shared this year’s calendar, which showcased the rich biodiversity present on campus. They wrote then on X: “Get ready to be mesmerized by the beauty of our campus! We’re thrilled to unveil the University of Hyderabad’s exquisite wall calendar 2025, showcasing the stunning biodiversity of our campus! From vibrant flowers to majestic trees, and fascinating wildlife to water bodies, our campus is a haven for nature lovers. We are grateful to all who contributed these enthralling pictures. More than 500 pictures were received for the calendar 2025.”

Kancha Gachibowli land issue

The current post gained traction as it came amid the ongoing land dispute at the Kancha Gachibowli area, and the earlier claims that there was no wildlife on the campus premises.

Recently, the Telangana government had also announced plans to take action against those circulating morphed, AI-generated videos and images showing wildlife linked to the Kancha Gachibowli controversy.

Among the examples cited were audio clips said to contain the cries of peacocks and visuals of deer allegedly injured by bulldozers – content described as deliberately fabricated.

The Telangana government proposed to auction 400 acres of land in the Kancha Gachibowli area, sparking strong opposition from students and activists. They condemned the move as a threat to education, biodiversity, and public welfare, criticizing the government’s privatization efforts.

Amid the protests, the government deployed earth movers to clear the contended land on 31 March, leading to intensified protests.

Following this, the Supreme Court stayed the felling of trees, issuing a warning that the Telangana Chief Secretary, Shanthi Kumari, would be held personally liable for any violations. Expressing shock over large-scale deforestation, the court took suo motu cognizance of the matter and sought an explanation from the state government.

After the Supreme Court’s stay order, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also announced the formation of a high-level committee to consult with key stakeholders and devise a resolution.
