The Central government has released funds for the construction of two hostels for the students of Osmania University.

The government approved the construction of hostels at a cost of ₹30 crore as a part of the Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojana (PM AJAY) scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

The Centre released an initial amount of ₹7.5 crore. The hostels will be constructed with 100 percent funds from the Central government, each costing ₹14.60 crore.

The two hostels — one for men and another for women — are meant to accommodate a total of 500 students.

Earlier in the year, the Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy had expressed shock over the deplorable condition of the hostels during his visit to the campus. He then spoke to Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar and requested his support for constructing two hostels in May 2023

In his letter dated 5 May 2023, Kishan Reddy said, “On several occasions in the past, I had an opportunity to inspect the Scheduled Caste (SC) hostels at Osmania University. These hostels are poorly maintained and lack basic facilities preventing students from focusing on educational activities.”

Further, the state government has not made any attempts to improve facilities for SC students, he said. “Since students deserve better facilities, we request you to consider constructing two hostels — one for males and one for females — to accommodate a total of 500 students each with 250 students,” he said.

The Union Minister Virendra Kumar responded positively and agreed to release funds at the earliest. Kishan Reddy thanked Virendra Kumar and informed him that he would work hard to make these two new hostels available to SC students studying at Osmania University as soon as possible.
