Two police officers injured in Adilabad mob violence

Two police officers were injured in Adilabad district on 21 December after a mob turned violent following the rescue of a 13-year-old girl who had been abducted and molested by a relative.

The incident unfolded in Gudihatnoor village, after the victim’s family filed a missing person report with the Ichoda police. Officers swiftly located the girl at the accused’s residence.

However, when police attempted to arrest the suspect, a large group of villagers gathered, initially attacking the accused and setting his house on fire.

Police intervened, rescuing the accused and transporting him to a local hospital. The mob then redirected their anger towards the police officers, damaging police vehicles and injuring the Ichoda Circle Inspector (CI) and Sub-Inspector (SI).

Adilabad Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed to South First that both officers sustained only minor injuries. He also stated that both the victim and the accused are currently undergoing medical examinations.

“It was an instantaneous outrage by the villagers as they wanted us to hand over the accused to them,” the SP explained.

A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused. Police are currently reviewing video footage to identify individuals involved in the attack on the officers and police vehicles.
