Hyderabad TSPSC aspirant suicide 'We have to bear the brunt, says management as hostel on the verge of shutting down

Brindhavan Girls Hostel, where 23-year-old government job aspirant Marri Pravalika allegedly died by suicide on 13 October, has been almost entirely vacated by its occupants.

When South First visited the hostel on Monday, 16 October, it seemed gloomy, with the outside banners displaying the hostel’s details torn. The management staff said only a handful of women remained, and they, too, would be leaving soon.

“Here, we have around 10 rooms from two-sharing to five-sharing. There were 85 women living in the hostel till three days ago. After Pravalika’s death, almost all of them have left. Only four-five women are left,” one of the staff members told South First on condition of anonymity.

‘We have to bear the brunt’

A day after the incident, the Hyderabad police claimed that “love failure” forced the woman from Warangal to take the extreme step.

Her death sparked a mass protest on Friday night as hundreds of students spilled over to the street in Ashok Nagar, and held the BRS government responsible for the tragic incident.

Her brother told South First earlier that she was preparing for the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exams.

“It’s unfortunate, what has happened. But now we have to bear the brunt of it as most of the women have left. After those remaining depart, we, too, will shut this hostel down and leave,” the hostel staff said.

They added: “We invested a lot of money [in the hostel]. Now, we don’t know how long will it take to recover from this financial burden. Who will want to stay after a suicide or death has happened in this place? Now, we are at rock bottom, but who cares about us?”

Pointing to another incident in Domalguda, where a 32-year-old consumed poison in a bid to end their life, on 15 October and later died, the staff posed a series of questions.

“A student died in that hostel as well, but nobody made it an issue. Why?” they asked.

“Another woman student died in this lane in a similar manner two months ago. Why was it not made an issue?” they continued.

The reference was to political parties — from the Congress to the BJP to even the AIMIM — taking on the BRS government in the state.

Outside the hostel, on RTC X Roads, several commuters could be seen stopping and trying to peep inside the hostel premises.

A few hostellers were packing their stuff and preparing to leave.

There was nobody inside the kitchen of the hostel mess, where preparations for dinner would begin on other days as sunset.

Cops awaiting forensic report

While Pravalika’s brother, told South First that she was not having an affair and was instead worried over the increasing financial burden on the family in the form of coaching fees, the police have been maintaining that she was dejected after her boyfriend, one Shivaram Rathod, left her for another woman.

The police said Rathod, who is a resident of the Mahabubnagar district, was likely to be booked under IPC Section 306, pertaining to the abetment of suicide.

The police also said that an arrest might take place based on the physical evidence they had gathered — such as Pravalika’s phone, the suicide note, and CCTV footage of the two — once a report came from the forensic science laboratory (FSL).

“We have not received the FSL report yet. It might take three more days. We have obtained the Call Details Record (CDR), but the charges may be altered based on the forensic report,” DCP (Central Zone) M Venkateshwarlu told South First.

He added: “From the CDR, we have established the contacts of Pravalika and are looking into it.”

Meanwhile, Chikkadpally Station House Officer (SHO) P Naresh was suspended by the newly appointed Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Sandeep Shandilya on Monday over negligence on duty, which led to the mass protests.
