The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has warned those raising their voice against the party high command’s selection of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

TPCC working president Bomma Mahesh Kumar Goud said in a statement that the party would take stern action against any leader — regardless of their stature and station — if that person publicly found fault with the party and its decisions.

He said: “Once the party makes a decision, all the leaders have to abide by it. If the decisions are not palatable, they should present their view to the party leadership at the appropriate party fora. If the leaders castigate the party leadership in the open, action against them will follow.”

The reason behind the warning

The Congress handed out the warning apparently intending to nip in the bud any rumblings in the party over several decisions that it has taken ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Lately, a few senior leaders have not been hiding their displeasure with the Congress’ decision to welcome leaders from the BRS into the party.

They have been arguing that this had curtailed the chances of native Congress leaders from getting party tickets to contest in the Lok Sabha polls.

The first salvo was fired by party vice-president G Niranjan who said that rolling out the red carpet for migrants from the BRS would be nothing but negating the mandate given by the people to the Congress.

He wondered what message the party was sending by fielding BRS turncoats like P Sunita Mahender Reddy, G Ranjith Reddy, and D Nagender in the Lok Sabha elections on Congress tickets.

In a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, he said the practice of entertaining “imported” leaders would demoralise workers. He also requested the high command to reconsider fielding them in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The party should field those who remain loyal to it regardless of whether they were financially well-off, he said.

After Niranjan’s open letter to Kharge, AICC in-charge for Telangana Deepa Dasmunsi and party vice-president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud advised him not to be critical of the party high command’s decision in public.

More dissent, more action

Another senior leader and former Rajya Sabha member V Hanumanth Rao asked TPCC president and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy why he was trying to onboard leaders from the BRS.

Revanth Reddy had said that with the defeat of the BRS, the state got rid of the pest that was eating into its vitals.

“If that was his view, how come he is welcoming leaders from the same party into the Congress?” asked Rao.

He added that though he tried to get Revanth Reddy’s appointment, he could not succeed.

Rao also concurred that the party workers were being demoralised by the Congress’ policy of accommodating migrants in the list of candidates for the Lok Sabha elections.

He reminded Revanth Reddy that that he became the chief minister within four years though several Congress leaders could not reach the position despite toiling throughout life.

Rao said that a change had come over the Revanth Reddy after he became the chief minister. “Is it appropriate to allot two to three tickets to those who come from the same family?” he asked.

The TPCC leadership is aware of Rao’s outburst at Revanth Reddy and is understood to have sent a report to the party high command.
