Telangana women journalists lodge complaint against targeted abuse

Synopsis: In their written complaint, the journalists stated that the trolling appeared to be part of an organized effort to instill fear and obstruct their professional work. They alleged that some users have gone to the extent of sharing their residential details online.

A group of women journalists of Telangana, met the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar on Tuesday, 18 November, and lodged a formal complaint detailing continuous online trolling, harassment, and vulgar attacks.

During the meeting, the journalists presented videos and evidence highlighting abusive social media posts and comments. They told the Commissioner that several handles have been systematically targeting women journalists with derogatory remarks and coordinated hate campaigns aimed at intimidation.

Organised effort to instill fear

In their written complaint, the journalists stated that the trolling appeared to be part of an organized effort to instill fear and obstruct their professional work. They alleged that some users have gone to the extent of sharing their residential details online.

The complainants demanded a detailed probe under the IPC and IT Act, action against the responsible handles, and protective measures for women journalists facing such threats.

VC Sajjanar has assured stringent action against individuals responsible for issuing online threats and abuse targeting women journalists. He further directed them to provide all available links, screenshots, and videos, assuring prompt action.

Noting that submitted evidence would be examined and further steps initiated, the officer assured, “We will take action at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, the delegation also met Telangana State Commission for Women Chairperson Nerella Sharada, seeking her intervention on the issue.

They urged the Commission to establish a special cell for monitoring online harassment, ensure strict implementation of cyber laws, and launch awareness drives to combat digital abuse.

Responding positively, Sharada assured that the matter would be taken up with Telangana DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy, Commissioner Sajjanar, Cyber Security Bureau Director Shikha Goel, and the Chief Minister’s Office.

She added that the Commission is working on a comprehensive action plan to address online abuse and safeguard women.
