A march as part of the postcard campaign for the weavers of Telangana.

Lakhs of postcards written by Telangana handloom weavers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi were deposited at the General Post Office (GPO) at Abids in Hyderabad on Monday, 31 October.

The weavers and handloom supporters initially gathered by the thousands at Nizam College Grounds and then went to the GPO in a procession.

A huge number of people holding placards of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Handlooms Minister KT Rama Rao participated in the programme.

They also displayed placards with the demand that the 5 percent Goods and Service Tax (GST) on handloom products and their raw materials be rolled back.

The weavers wrote the postcards in response to the call given by KTR, who launched the campaign on 22 October demanding that the GST be rolled back.

MLC L Ramana, Telangana State Handloom Development Corporation Limited Chairperson Chinta Prabhakar, Telangana Powerloom and Textiles Development Corporation Limited Chairperson Guduri Praveen, former Rajya Sabha member Ananda Bhaskar Rapolu, and Warangal Mayor Gundu Sudharani took part in the programme.

Addressing people who gathered at the college grounds, Ramana demanded that the GST be rolled back.

He also demanded that the Union government restore the schemes for weavers that were scrapped, including the ICICI Lombard Health Scheme and the Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana.

Ramana also said that K Chandrashekar Rao took several measures to protect the handloom sector, which included Nethanna Ku Bima, Chenetha Mithra, Nethannaku Cheyutha, and a loan waiver to the weavers.
