Telangana tribal farmer alleges police brutality, caste-based abuse over urea protest

Synopsis: A 22-year-old tribal farmer from Telangana’s Nalgonda district has alleged severe police assault and caste-based abuse after protesting delays in urea supply. His wife lodged a formal complaint with the Telangana Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, alleging that a sub-inspector and two constables beat him with a lathi, leaving him unable to walk, and threatened him not to reveal the assault.

A 22-year-old tribal farmer from Telangana’s Nalgonda has alleged severe physical assault and caste-based abuse by Vadapalli police after he took part in a protest demanding timely supply of urea.

Dhanavath Sai Siddu, from the Lambadi community and hailing from Kothapeta Tanda village in Damaracherla mandal, reportedly joined a dharna last week over delays in urea supply.

His wife, Dhanavath Bhumika, filed a formal complaint with the Telangana Commission for Scheduled Castes and Tribes on Wednesday, 23 September, seeking action against Sub-Inspector Srikanth Reddy, Constable Kotaiah, and others who allegedly assaulted her husband.

In the complaint, Bhumika stated that police officers took Siddu away at about 6 am on 9 September. She said that after reaching the police station, he was taken to a room upstairs, where the Sub-Inspector and two constables took turns beating her husband so severely that he could not stand properly when asked to get up and walk.

While two constables held him, the SI reportedly used a lathi to beat his heels for about 25 minutes.

The assault reportedly left Siddu unable to walk. “I gave him water, but he immediately vomited. Even while taking him to court, the SI kicked him and verbally abused him,” Bhumika said in her complaint.

She also alleged that Siddu was forced to pay for petrol to reach the hospital and was mocked by police when he complained of pain.

He reportedly told her that he was threatened not to reveal the assault to doctors or the judge, or he would be denied bail.
