A 20-year-old engineering student allegedly died by suicide at his house in Hyderabad, even as family members on Tuesday, 27 February, alleged that he took the extreme step due to harassment from executives of an online loan app over repayment.
The deceased, who was a BTech third-year student, hanged himself from the ceiling fan on Monday when nobody else was in the house, police said, adding that they are also investigating the allegations of harassment by the loan app executives.
Police reported that a preliminary investigation revealed the student had borrowed money from friends, other students in college, and online loan apps.
He also incurred losses from playing online games and was distressed about his financial debts.
The student’s father stated that he had repaid ₹3 lakh of the loan amount.
Family members claimed that despite clearing the loans, agents from the loan app were harassing them by calling other family members and relatives for repayment.
Subsequently, the student died by suicide.
A police official at Gudimalkapur Police Station stated that they are investigating the allegations of harassment by loan app agents, although no suicide note was found.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.
