Telangana rains: Central team to visit flood-affected districts from 31 July

The Union government has deputed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation in Telangana in the wake of floods that wreaked havoc during the heavy rains that lashed the state in the last few days.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah asked the home secretary to immediately depute a team to Telangana to assess the flood situation on the night of Saturday, 29 July,

This came after Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy and other senior leaders of the saffron party apprised him of the flood situation in the state.

The team

Headed by the advisor of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Kunal Satyarthi, the team comprises representatives from the Ministry and Departments of Agriculture, Finance, Jal Shakti, Power, Road Transport and Highways, and National Remote Sensing Centre.

At least 18 people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents due to the downpour that lashed Telangana during the past week, according to officials.

Relief work gained momentum on Saturday as rainfall came to a halt in many parts of the state.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao supervised the relief operations during the day speaking to ministers and Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumari, an official release said on Saturday night.

To conduct assessment of damages

They will visit the state with the responsibility of an on-the-spot first-hand assessment of the damage and relief works carried out by the state administration.

Upon submission of a final memorandum by the Telangana government, the same central team will visit the state again for a detailed assessment of damage and make a final recommendation for the admissibility of additional central assistance following the flood during the southwest monsoon 2023.

The team will recommend whether the disaster could be considered to be of a “severe nature”.

Upon assessment of damages based on the IMCT visit and the detailed memorandum which would be submitted by the Telangana government, the team would submit a report to the Disaster Management Division of the MHA, according to Disaster Management Consultant Om Prakash.

The team head will also possess details of allocation, release of funds and expenditure incurred during 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23, under various schemes or programmes implemented by the Ministry or Department concerned in Telangana.

In a press release, the Met Centre said heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Jagityal, Rajanna Sirsilla, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem of Telangana on 1 August.
