Telangana Rains: Amit Shah assures help for relief and rescue operations in flood-hit areas

Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy, on Thursday, 27 July, spoke to Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah and explained to him the prevailing flood situation in Telangana. Amit Shah, in turn, has promised all possible help in the rescue and relief work for safeguarding the people of Telangana.

“Presently, two helicopters are in service and five NDRF teams are also deployed for rescue and relief work. Rescue mission for the stranded people is underway,” Kishan Reddy tweeted.

“Had a telephonic talk with the Union Home Secretary and briefed him on the prevailing flood situation caused due to incessant rains in Telangana. The Home Secretary informed that the central government has pressed helicopter services and other relief measures through various central agencies, including NDRF headquarters, with immediate effect,” he tweeted.

The central government has assured extension of all relief efforts to safeguard the people in the state.

District Collectors’ teleconference

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari directed the district collectors to carry out intensive relief and rehabilitation programmes in the areas that are severely affected due to heavy rains in Telangana over the past few days.

At a teleconference with collectors on Thursday, she took stock of the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken in the districts hit by heavy rains and floods, as well as precautionary measures in accordance with the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

Director-General of Police Anjani Kumar, Special Chief Secretary (Finance) K Ramakrishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary (Irrigation) Rajat Kumar, Secretary of Disaster Management Department Rahul Bojja, DG Fire Services Department, and other senior officials participated in this teleconference.

Santhi Kumari said that an NDRF team was being sent immediately to Khammam and a helicopter to Burgampahad, as per the orders given by KCR. She stated that relief programmes should be undertaken in flood-prone areas, as well as railway stations and bus stands where passengers are stranded.

She said that blankets, bedsheets, and additional medicines will be sent to districts and complimented the District Collectors for working together with the district government administration to prevent loss of life and property, even as heavy rains lash the state.

District collectors, commissioners of police, and superintendents of police have been ordered to stay in the district headquarters and monitor the situation from time to time. Santhi Kumari said that people should be made aware of the precautionary measures to be taken due to heavy rains and floods.

Relief and rescue operations

All primary health centres, community health centres, district hospitals, and private hospitals in the districts should be kept open 24 hours a day, she added.

The chief secretary said that 10,696 people from 108 villages have been shifted to safer places in the state. As many as 600 people from Morampalli village of Bhupalpally district and 19 workers stranded in a sand quarry near Gopalpur of Manthani in Peddapalli district were rescued and shifted to safer locations. Six people were rescued by the Army helicopter in Morampalli village.

She said that steps were being taken to send NDRF and other support teams as per the requests received from the Collectors of various districts. Additionally, four more helicopters and 10 NDRF teams have been requested for and some NDRF teams are expected soon, she added.

Anjani Kumar said that with the help of the district administration, 7,000 people have been shifted to safe places so far. He said that national highways and other roads have been damaged in 85 areas and steps are being taken with officials of the concerned departments. He stated that the police are working in coordination with the District Collectors and the administration.

Disaster Management Secretary Rahul Bojja said the NDRF teams were participating in relief and rehabilitation activities in various parts of the state. Special Chief Secretary (Finance) Ramakrishna Rao said that the Collectors have been authorised to draw necessary funds for relief and rehabilitation programmes.

Several Collectors briefed the Chief Secretary about the relief measures taken by them in their districts.
