The Telangana police seized “unaccounted” cash to the tune of ₹6.65 crore from Patima Multiplex at Karimnagar in a pre-dawn swoop on Saturday, 16 March.

The police said the search was carried out based on a tipoff.

“We searched the multiplex and seized ₹6.65 crore unaccounted cash. We will deposit the money in the court. The aggrieved party could approach the court for getting the amount released after explaining its source,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Karimnagar) G Narender said.

According to a source, the multiplex belonged to the relatives of BRS’s nominee in Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat and former MP B Vinod Kumar. The seized cash was suspected to have been stashed away for use during the election campaign.

It was alleged that the money was shifted to the multiplex since it would be difficult to do so after the Election Commission of India’s announcement of the poll schedule at 3 pm on Saturday.

Police acting with an iron hand

After losing the Lok Sabah election in 2019 to BJP’s Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Kumar has been working to wrest the seat back. Accordingly, he has been nursing the constituency for the past five years.

Ever since the Congress government came to power, the police and other enforcement agencies have been acting with an iron hand against those facing allegations of involvement in illegal activities.

The latest was the arrest of Madhusudan Reddy, brother of BRS Patancheru MLA Gudem Mahipal Reddy on Friday, 15 March, for illegal and excess mining by his corporate entities.

The Sangareddy police acted against the company after it was revealed that Madhusudan Reddy had been mining outside the allotted area.

After the arrest, the BRS condemned the way he was taken into custody. Former Finance Minister T Harish Rao condemned the police for arresting Madhusudan Reddy without serving any notice. The BRS leader said that the Congress government was using the police to intimidate BRS MLAs.
