Telangana Police Annual Report 2024

Director General of Police (DGP) Jitender Reddy on Sunday, 29 December released the Telangana Police Annual Report 2024. It is a comprehensive statewide report, including the Hyderabad tri-commissionerate report.

It said that the state police saw an increase of 31,165 cases in 2024, bringing the total cases to 1,69,477, compared to 1,38,312 in 2023.

That marks a 22.5 percent increase in the registered cases as opposed to the 4.7  percent increase between 2022 and 2023. Notably, there was a sharp jump in the number of cheating cases, which included cybercrime, by 34.08 percent compared to the previous year.

There were over 31,000 additional crimes registered this year than in 2023

Concerning trends in crimes against women and children

The report showed a spike in the number of registered rape cases. At an increase of 28.94 percent, there were 2,945 cases in 2024 as opposed to 2,285 cases in 2023.

However, a breakdown of the 2024 cases presents a concerning reality. Of the 2,945 cases, 87 survivors were under 15-years-old.

1,970 of the survivors were aged between 15 and 18, the largest demographic, while 888 were over 18 years of age.

In all, 2,057 of the survivors were minors.

A majority of rape survivors were aged between 15 and 18 in 2024, with 99.2% of perpetrators being known to the survivors.

Notably, in 2,922 cases the perpetrators were known to survivors, while only 23, 0.8 percent of the total cases, had perpetrators unknown to the survivors.

Additionally, the police noted that teenage relationships were causing concerns and that the police made arrests within eight hours in 940 cases.

Additionally, a reported ₹5.42 crore was paid out in compensations in 428 cases.

Crime against women saw an increase of 4.78 percent from 19,013 cases in 2023 to 19,922 cases in 2024.

Other than rape cases, there was a sharp increase in kidnap and abduction cases, by 26.92 percent compared to last year. The number of cases in 2024 went up to 1,122 from 884 in 2023.

However, there was a reduction in registered dowry-related crimes. There was a reduction of 33 percent in dowry murders, 5.13 percent in dowry harassment, and a 4.55 percent reduction in dowry deaths in 2024.

Radio silence on Lagcherla TGSP protests

The police noted that all major festivals and events concluded peacefully.

“Law & Order has been maintained well in the state, with effective check on violent crimes, activities of Maoist, communal and terror outfits,” the report reads in the first few pages.

Speaking of the Jainoor communal riots, it pats itself on the back for effectively handling the situation.

Notably, the clashes took place when a Muslim man raped an Adivasi woman and riots broke out between both communities. Jainoor was placed under curfew for months following the incident. However, there is no mention of any other incidents that occurred in the state.

However, it did not acknowledge one important case in Telangana this year, the attack on Vikarabad District Collector.

Interestingly, apart from omitting the Lagcherla attack on the Vikarabad Collector from the report, DGP Jitender actively dodged the question at the press meet.

He also dodged questions regarding the Telangana Special Police force protests that took place earlier.

Cybercrimes on the rise

It should also be noted that cybercrimes had gone up by 26.65 percent from 2023’s 16,339 cases to 24,643 cases in 2024, an increase of 8,304 cases.

The report said the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau blocked 14,984 Sim cards in 2024.

Additionally, they blocked 9,811 IMEI numbers, 1,825 URLs and websites this year. 25,184 cases were reported at the Cyber Security Bureau in 2024 as against 17,571 cases in 2023 which increased 43.33 percent in 2024.

However, in good news, the Cyber Security Bureau refunded close to ₹180 crore to victims of cyber fraud this year as opposed to ₹8 crore in 2023, an increase of 2,060 percent.
