Synopsis: The Telangana government has launched a scheme to allocate petrol stations exclusively to women-led self-help groups, aiming to promote financial independence. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy inaugurated an all-women petrol station in Narayanpet and announced plans to expand the initiative across all districts, seeking support from the Centre and oil marketing companies.
The ruling Congress in Telangana is making an unprecedented effort to woo women voters. Its latest initiative involves the allotment of petrol stations exclusively to women. One such all-women petrol station was inaugurated on Friday, 21 February, at Appakpally in Narayanpet district.
The district Mahila Samakhya, a federation of self-help groups, owns and operates the station, which was allocated by BPCL. The state government hopes this scheme will help women achieve financial independence.

Inaugurating the Narayanpet petrol station, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced plans to allocate a petrol station to self-help groups in each district, eventually extending the initiative to all 119 Assembly constituencies in the state. The Narayanpet station cost ₹1.23 crore, and he expressed confidence in securing funds for similar projects.
He also outlined his vision of showcasing the “strength of women” once self-help group membership in the state surpasses one crore. He said he would invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the event and seek financial support for the initiative.
Meanwhile, BJP Vice-President and Mahabubnagar MP DK Aruna appeared to question why the Centre should assist the Congress, mildly protesting against the proposal.
Revanth Reddy responded by reminding her that she hails from the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district and shares the responsibility of bringing the Prime Minister to the event. He stressed that while political rivalry is inevitable during elections, the Centre and state must collaborate for the welfare of the people.
In a demonstration of power of political optics, Revanth Reddy openly sought Narendra Modi’s support in persuading oil marketing companies to allocate petrol stations to women while ensuring state government funding for self-help groups.
These petrol stations will be managed by self-help groups comprising women from economically weaker sections. The government will provide land and financial assistance, while oil marketing companies will issue licences.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Danasari Anasuya, also known as Seethakka, later wrote on X that women’s aspirations were becoming a reality. “We promised, and we are delivering. Through Indira Mahila Shakti, our people’s government is empowering millions of women to achieve self-employment and financial independence,” she said.
