Hyderabad child rape

A POCSO court in Hyderabad on Thursday, 11 August, sentenced a 33-year-old Odisha man to 20 years in prison for raping an eight-year-old.

The court also slapped a fine of ₹1,000 on the convict in the nearly-seven-year-old case that was registered at the Ghatkesar police station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The convict, Jagannath Behera, is a native of the Badanuagaon village in the Kendujhar district in Odisha.

The case dates back to 26 August, 2015, when the victim’s mother registered a complaint with Ghateskar Police Station in the Medchal district, accusing Behera of raping her daughter.

The court found him guilty under Section 4 (not less than 20 years punishment for committing penetrative assault) of the POCSO Act.

The victim’s mother in her complaint said Behera took away her daughter in her and her husband’s absence at around 11 pm on the night of 25 August, 2015, from their house.

She added that after taking her daughter to the nearby bushes, the convict raped her.

When the couple — employees of a private college in the area — came searching for the girl, Behera saw them and fled the crime scene.

“The convict has been taken to Cherlapalli jail, where he will serve out his sentence,” Ghateskar Police Station Circle Inspector N Chandra Babu told South First.
