A 29-year-old Telangana native was shot dead by the Santa Clara Police in the United States on 3 September, allegedly following a commotion with his roommates.

In a statement, Santa Clara Police said Mohammed Nizamuddin, from Mahabubnagar in Telangana, was shot after he was found inside his residence in Santa Clara, over the body of a roommate, with a knife.

However, according to reports, his family alleged racial discrimination and harassment and sought an investigation into the situation leading to his death.

The incident gained public attention after Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT) Spokesman Amjed Ullah Khan posted about it on X on Thursday, 18 September.

He said Nizamuddin’s family has reached out to Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to make the necessary arrangements to send the mortal remains back to Telangana.

What the police said

Santa Clara Police Chief Cory Morgan, in a video release on 6 September, claimed Nizammudin had stabbed his roommate and continued to attack despite being told to stand down when the police had to intervene.

“Santa Clara Police Department (SCPD) officers responded to the 1800 Block of Eisenhower Drive in Santa Clara for the report of a stabbing in a residence. The caller stated the suspect had stabbed one victim in the residence,” the statement read.

“The situation had escalated, and the suspect was stabbing his roommate. The first-arriving officer ran to the front door and identified himself. The officer could hear a loud commotion inside and decisively made a crisis entry by kicking open the locked front door. The officer quickly followed the sound to the hallway where the attack was taking place. The officer saw four people in the hallway, including the suspect who was straddling the victim, effectively pinning him to the ground,” Morgan said.

He added that the police personnel tried to de-escalate the situation, but the suspect ignored them and raised his hand again in a striking position. Morgan said the officer fired four bullets into Nizammuddin after he noted that the knife was coming again at the victim.

Nizammudin was rushed to a hospital, but he died soon.

Alleged racial discrimination

According to reports, his family pointed out a LinkedIn post by him that said: “I have been a victim of racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage-fraud, wrongful termination and obstruction of Justice.”

“Enough is enough, white supremacy/racist white American mentality has to end,” he added. In the post, he detailed alleged instances of racial discrimination, poisoning of his food, eviction and what he described as continued surveillance and intimidation by a purported detective.

“His father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, had requested Dr S Jaishankar to ask the Indian Embassy in the US and the Consulate General of India in San Francisco to inquire in detail about the death of his son and make necessary arrangements to send the mortal remains back to Mahbubnagar District in Telangana,” Khan wrote on X.

The family sought a thorough probe into the allegations and the circumstances that led to his death.
