The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) announced the schedule for elections to 116 municipalities and seven Municipal Corporations in the state on Tuesday, 27 January, setting the stage for a crucial phase in urban local body governance across the state.
Polling will be held on 11 February, with counting of votes scheduled for 13 February.
The election process will formally commence on Wednesday, 28 January, with the issue of election notification by the Returning Officers, as mandated under Section 195(4) of the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.
From this date onwards, nominations will be received by the respective Returning Officers between 10.30 am and 5 pm. The notification will also specify the reservation status of wards, a key component in the electoral process.
The same day, Returning Officers will display ward-wise electoral rolls of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), in accordance with Rule 4 of the Telangana Municipalities and Municipal Corporations (Conduct of Elections) Rules, 2019. This will enable political parties and candidates to verify voter details before the nomination process gathers momentum.
The last date for filing nominations is 30 January. Nomination submissions will be accepted up to 5 pm. Scrutiny will take place from 11 am on 31 January. The list of valid nominations will be published on 31 January itself.
Nominations can be withdrawn until 3 pm on 3 February, after which the final list of contesting candidates will be published.
Polling will be from 7 am to 5 pm on 11 February across all notified urban local bodies in the state. The SEC has also made provisions for a re-poll on 12 February, if necessary, to address any unforeseen contingencies.
Counting of votes will commence at 8 am on 13 February, and results will be declared soon after the completion of counting, the notification issued by State Election Commissioner I Rani Kumudini, said.
With the Model Code of Conduct coming into force for the notified municipalities and municipal corporations, authorities have begun preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process across Telangana’s urban centres.
