Telangana NREGA funds

Telangana Municipal Administration Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday, 27 March, accused the BJP-led Central government of trying to create problems by withholding ₹1,300 crore due to the state under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

He, however, said the state government had decided to release ₹1,200 crore immediately to help each gram panchayat clear pending bills under ₹1 crore.

“The funds would help them clear bills for works done in villages at least during the last three months,” he said.

‘Centre slashing allocations’

The minister was speaking at a function organised at the Rajanna Sircilla district collector’s office for the distribution of the National Panchayat Awards.

He said that apart from the funds squeeze, the Centre was also slowly slashing the allocations to the state under the Act, much like imposing sanctions on an enemy country.

The MAUD minister said that despite the unhelpful attitude of the Centre, Telangana was blazing a new trail in rural development.

“Under Palle Pragathi, the Telangana state had brought about a revolutionary change in villages. Though the BJP dispensation had serious political differences with the BRS rule in the state, it could not help recognizing progress being achieved.,” he said, referring to the Centre recognising 19 villages in Telangana as the best gram panchayats under various parameters from among 20 best gram panchayats in the country.

Telangana development model

The minister said it was heartening to note that all the 12,789 gram panchayats in the state were competing with one another to come out as the best on all growth parameters.

“In the past, we used to visit states like Kerala to study the development models in villages. Now delegations from 11-12 states are visiting Telangana to study how growth has become possible,” he said.

He also pointed out that one should feel proud that governance in Telangana has been made part of the study for the young IAS officers who go to Mussoorie in Uttarakhand for training immediately after their selection.

The minister said that Telangana would be able to achieve more growth if the Centre too did its part and helped the state and appealed to sarpanches to explain to people in villages how the state government was going to the rescue of the villages as it was keen on ensuring all-round development of the rural areas.
