Synopsis: Raja Singh’s counsel, Advocate Karuna Sagar, said the complainant had conceded, under examination, that the disputed statements were drawn from references in Islamic literature. The Special Court for MPs/MLAs in Hyderabad has acquitted Telangana MLA T Raja Singh in a case registered against him over remarks concerning Prophet Muhammad. The case was filed in 2022 at the Mangalhat police station under Sections 153A(a)(b), 295A, 504, 505(2) and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

Following his arrest, a magistrate refused to grant custodial remand sought in the matter. Singh was subsequently booked under the Preventive Detention Act.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Advocate Karuna Sagar, representing Singh, said the complainant had conceded that the disputed statements drew from references found in Islamic literature. He added that after reviewing the witness testimony and evidence placed before it, the court concluded that no case had been established against the MLA and ordered his acquittal.

The verdict brings to a close one of the several criminal cases pending against Singh, a four-time MLA from Goshamahal known for his communally charged speeches.

Singh was suspended from the BJP in August 2022, for his alleged unsavoury remarks against Prophet Mohammad in a video posted on YouTube. The video was in response to a scheduled show by stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui in Hyderabad.

The BJP suspended Singh from the party hours after his arrest. The MLA, arrested under the provisions of the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, was released in November 2022.

His suspension was revoked ahead of the 30 November Assembly election in Telangana, when he was given the ticket to contest again from Goshamahal in Hyderabad.

Singh, who has more than 75 criminal cases against him, was the only BJP candidate to win the state Assembly elections in 2018.

The party on 8 January made him in-charge of the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.

In June 2025, Singh resigned from the BJP, protesting against the appointment of N Ramachander Rao as the organisation’s state president.
