The Medchal Malkajgiri district court in Telangana on Tuesday, 13 September, sentenced a 42-year-old man to life in prison for murdering his second wife.

The court also slapped a fine of ₹7,000 on the convict in the six-year-old case that was registered at the Kushaiguda Police Station under the IPC Sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 498A (husband or his relatives harassing the wife).

The convict, Lingala Ramesh, is a native of the Gandamalla village in the Thurkapally Mandal of Yadadri Bhuvangiri district, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The case dates back to 4 July, 2016, when the Kushaiguda police registered it based on a complaint from the victim, Lingala Anitha, aged 25 then.

The victim, who was being treated for her burns in the city’s Gandhi Hospital, succumbed to her injuries three days later.

The victim, in her statement to the police, said that Ramesh concealed his first marriage from her and continued his relationship with his first wife even after marrying her.

According to the police, Anitha, a mother of two and house help, added that Ramesh used to continuously harass her mentally and assault her physically.

“Ramesh used to accuse Anitha of being in illicit relationships with whomever she used to speak with. They were married for nine years,” the police said.

The cops added that, on the night of 4 July, 2016, Ramesh returned home in an inebriated state and fought with Anitha.

“He blamed her for not seeking his permission before meeting his sister. Ramesh then poured kerosene on Anitha, set her ablaze, and fled the spot,” the cops said.

The accused will serve his sentence in the Cherlapalli central jail, the cops told South First.
