Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is rolling the Dalit dice. He will unveil India’s tallest BR Ambedkar statue near the iconic Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad on 14 April.

The 125-foot statue will be unveiled on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the man known country-wide as the “Father of the Indian Constitution”.

The chief minister, who has been closely monitoring the work, held yet another review at Pragathi Bhavan with officials on Tuesday, 4 April. The statue is made of 353 tonnes of steel and 112 tonnes of bronze. A memorial building housing a museum, conference hall, and a library form the basement of the statue.

Catering to Dalits

The chief minister has already stolen a march on the BJP in being a messiah of the Dalits by naming the new secretariat building after BR Ambedkar. He also came out with Dalit Bandhu, a scheme that the BRS believes would help the party hone in on Dalits with effortless ease.

The chief minister is also expected to address a huge public meeting on 14 April to capture the imagination of the Dalits and also to taunt the BJP over its Dalit credentials. He had already dared the BJP to emulate him and name the new Parliament building after BR Ambedkar.

KCR, on the occasion of Ambedkar’s death anniversary on 6 December last year, said that the inspiration for launching Dalit Bandhu was BR Ambedkar’s service to humanity.

He also said that Telangana owed its existence to Ambedkar as it would not have been possible had he not made the provision for the formation of new states in Article 3 of the Indian Constitution.

About the statue

The statue is coming up on an area of 11 acres near Hussain Sagar, next to NTR Gardens. Though the idea took birth as far back as 2016, it is becoming a reality only now.

The state government had initially contemplated entrusting the work of sculpting the statue to a Chinese company, but decided against it after the increase in hostilities between India and China.

The statue has been designed by sculptors Ram Vanji Sutar and his son Anil.

The duo was also involved in the construction of the statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhai Patel in Gujarat.

KCR asked the officials to felicitate Ram Vanji Sutar at the function for the magnificent statue that he had designed and sculpted.

The statue was cast in Delhi and was later brought to Hyderabad.
