The Telangana High Court on Monday, 24 July, granted permission to the state unit of the BJP unit to conduct a “maha dharna” at Indira Park in Hyderabad on Tuesday

The BJP is expected to protest against the BRS government in the state for its inordinate delay in allocating 2-BHK flats to beneficiaries.

Responding to a petition, the court sought to know why the police were not giving permission for the protest.

In response, the advocate who appeared on behalf of the government said the permission was denied as chances of BJP leaders heading towards the Secretariat in the name of the dharna were high.

He said another reason for denying permission was that over 1,000 people were expected to take part in the dharna.

In turn, the court asked if the police could not control 1,000 people, then what was their purpose of existence?

Why only the BJP?

The court also wanted to know why the police did not give permission for the BJP’s dharna, while permission was accorded to other parties.

The BJP had applied for permission on 14 July, requesting permission to hold the maha dharna at Indira Park.

The court asked whether there was no law-and-order problem because of dharnas organised against the Central government by leaders of the ruling party — referring to the BRS in Telangana.

The petitioner’s advocate brought to the notice of the court how the police prevented Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy and other leaders from inspecting 2BHK flats in Batasingaram on 20 July.

House arrest, preventive custody

He informed the court that several Union ministers would attend the dharna at Indira Park.

On 20 July, the police either placed several Telangana BJP leaders under house arrest or took them into preventive custody before inspecting the state government’s 2-BHK project site at Batasingaram in the suburbs.

Kishan Reddy, BJP MLAs Eatala Rajender and M Raghunandan Rao, former MLC N Ramachandra Rao, and other leaders were placed under house arrest, while most others were taken into preventive custody.
