Synopsis: Governor’s son Prateek Dev Varma and three others allegedly threatened Tripura Motha Party MLA Philip Reang, saying he and his family would be killed. The police, however, said a heated argument took place between Prateek’s group and the MLA.
Telangana Governor Jushnu Dev Varma’s son Prateek Dev Varma was arrested — and let out on bail — for allegedly threatening a Tripura MLA in Agartala.
The Agartala police arrested Prateek and three others on 2 September for allegedly threatening Tripura Motha Party (TMP) legislator Philip Reang inside the MLA Hostel at the New Capital Complex.
A case was filed against Prateek and his associates on 2 September, following the MLA’s complaint. “A case was registered against Prateek Dev Varma and three others the day before yesterday, for allegedly threatening TMP MLA Philip Reang,” NCC Police Station House Officer Prajit Malakar told South First.
“A few hours after the complaint was registered, we arrested all four accused,” he added.
Malakar further said that all four were granted bail soon after their arrest. “The charges were a bailable offence, and within a few hours of the arrest, Prathik Dev Varma was out on bail. The investigation is still going on,” he added.
The officer did not reveal the nature of the threat, but said there was a “heated argument”.
In his complaint, MLA Reang described the incident, stating that the accused surrounded him in the MLA hostel and threatened to kill him and his family. Reang reportedly took shelter with another MLA before approaching the police.
The BJP and TMP are allies in Tripura. Both Jishnu Dev Varma and his son belong to the party. Reang, who represents the Kanchanpur constituency, is among the prominent TMP legislators, with his party currently holding 13 seats in the 60-member Assembly.
Jishnu Dev Varma, a member of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura, was the deputy chief minister of that state in the first BJP-led government. In the 2023 Assembly polls, he lost his home constituency, Charilam, to Tripraha Indigenous People’s Regional Alliance candidate Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.
