The new Speaker for the Telangana Legislative Assembly will be elected by the members at 10.30 am on Thursday, 14 December.
The date of the election was notified by state Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan. Nominations for the position will be accepted between 10.30 am and 5 pm. on 13 December.
In all likelihood, the election would be unanimous. The Congress has already announced the name of Vikarabad MLA G Prasad Kumar as the candidate for the Speaker’s post. He is a former minister, belonging to a scheduled caste community.
The third Assembly of Telangana met for the first session on 9 December and pro-tem Speaker Akbaruddin Owaisi administered oath to the newly elected MLAs except for the BJP members and BRS legislature party leader K Chandrashekar Rao — KCR — and former minister and Sircilla MLA KT Rama Rao.
BJP’s T Raja Singh had on 8 December declared that none of the party’s new members would take oath if Owaisi, known for his alleged anti-Hindu stand, was nominated as the pro-tem Speaker.
Chandrashekar Rao was in hospital recovering from hip replacement surgery, after suffering a fracture in a fall in the washroom of his farmhouse at Erraville in Siddipet district early on 8 December.
Rama Rao informed the secretary of the Assembly that he would take the oath of office at a later date since he was attending to his father KCR.
